Summary and roles

Short Description:Bremen University has a strong expertise in marine research and education. It hosts the excellence cluster MARUM (Centre for Marine Environmental Research) and the international doctoral school GLOMAR (Global Change in the Marine Realm), both funded by the federal German initiative for excellence in science. Our study programme includes international M.Sc. courses in Marine Biology, Marine Microbiology, Environmental Physics, Marine Geosciences, International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology and we are a core partner of the ERASMUS MUNDUS M.Sc. course in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation. We have very close ties with the associated and co-located world-class research institutions Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research AWI, Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology ZMT and Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology MPI. Many PIs of these institutes are at the same time professors at Bremen University and actively contribute to the inspiring teaching atmosphere.

Together with the network of marine research institutions in Bremen (AWI, ZMT, MPI), Bremen University offers superb facilities and infrastructure for state-of-the-art hands-on training in marine sciences. Within MARES, Bremen University will take the lead in the first theme “Future Oceans: temperature changes, hypoxia and acidification” and contribute ecophysiological and ecological expertise to other research themes. MARES Ph.D. candidates will be integrated in running large-scale projects with EU or national funding. The unique combination of institutes working in polar, temperate and tropical marine ecosystems offers the ideal setting for comparative studies along latitudinal and temperature gradients. We offer a broad spectrum of modern methodologies from field sampling via experimental and analytical approaches to ecosystem modelling and provide access to German research vessels. The biogeographic scope of Bremen will cover the North Sea, European Arctic seas and the open ocean.-
