The University of Gdansk is the largest educational institution in the Pomorze region. We offer almost forty different fields of study with over one hundred and forty different specialisations. We have eleven faculties with almost thirty-three thousand students, doctoral students and post-graduates, who are taught by one thousand seven hundred academic staff. The Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdansk is the only institution of higher education in Poland that trains the students in oceanography. We conduct interdisciplinary scientific research in the seas, oceans and coastal areas. There are several departments at the Institute focusing on marine physics, marine geology, marine chemistry, marine biology, ecology and ecobiotechnology, among others. Education at the Institute is based on the Bologna System and the students are educated in three natural areas: oceanography (several specializations), geology and environmental protection (Marine Sciences).

The Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdansk will be a full partner in MARES project. We provide excellently equipped teaching and laboratory facilities (including the field station Hel Marine Station  and the research vessel “Oceanograf II”). As a very interdisciplinary scientific institution we propose PhD thesis topics covering various key research themes. We offer also a variety of courses including lectures and summer school. MARES students may benefit from the many facilities and services available at the whole University, including laboratories, libraries, student houses but also, apart from acquiring knowledge, students can realise their passions and broaden their interests in over one hundred and eighty scientific and scholarly research groups and student organisations operating at the University of Gdansk.
